An important port city on the Mediterranean Sea in northern Egypt. Founded by and named after Alexander the Great, Alexandria was a cosmopolitan city and a sanctuary for various spiritual movements and religions at the time of Mary Magdalene and Jesus. Women held a respected position in this city, almost equal to men.
